On an island with great gastronomy like Naxos, the traditional local cuisine is an invaluable and integral part of the island. If you visit the island, take a walk to the picturesque and beautiful village of Apiranthos and try the tastiest traditional dishes under the shadow of “Platanos”.
Apiranthos:
Apeiranthos is a traditional stone-built village in mountainous Naxos. It is 28 kilometers from the capital of the island and has been designated a traditional settlement since 1978. The village is developed around two Towers of the 17th century and to this day preserves its Venetian architecture. Arriving in Apeiranthos, you see narrow cobblestones, arches, and paved alleys. The Aperathite language idiom, the manners, and customs of the village show significant similarities with those of Crete, which reinforces the view that a large percentage of the population of Apirantho originates from there.
The “Platanos” Tavern:
“Platanos” is a traditional tavern in Apeiranthos, Naxos. It has been operating since 1982 and is located under the Venetian tower of “Zeugolis”. Its owners have preserved the traditional recipes from generation to generation with passion and love. Pure and fresh ingredients from the local Naxos market and local producers are always used for the dishes. Meats (veals, piglets, milk lambs, goats), vegetables, and cheeses (sour cheese, anthotyro, xinomyzithra) are traditionally cooked on charcoal with local oil, creating unique dishes of excellent quality.
