Baros Pass is the ultimate driving experience in Greece for driving lovers. It is considered the highest asphalted pass in Greece, at an elevation of 1.904m (6,246ft) above the sea level, located on the boundary of Epirus and Thessaly, in central Greece, being one of the few accessible mountain passes in the region. The view is unique and every turn takes your breath away, admiring the imposing rock formations and steep ravines.
It is one of the most beautiful and special routes that one can take, passing through the Vlach villages of Trikala towards the villages of Tzoumerka. More specifically, the road connects the villages Anthousa and Haliki (Thessaly) with Kalarrites and Matsouki (Epirus), two landscapes completely different from the green of Aspropotamos, to the wild and rocky mainland.
Also, from Baros Pass, the view towards the peaks of Peristeri (2,294m – 7,526ft) and Kakarditsa (2,429m- 7,969ft) is unique. The pass has been used for centuries as a transit corridor through the Pindos mountains, either for transporting people and goods to remote villages, or for animal grazing. In 2014, it was completely paved, as a result of which it emerged as a tourist point of interest.
It is a rich habitat with vast forests of firs, pines, hemlocks, beeches, maples, plane trees and willows, home to various wild animals, including a rare species of wild goat.
The road snakes through a stunning beauty of canyons, dense forests and steep slopes, with outstanding curves, magnificent views from both sides of the mountain and two main rivers accompanying the route. It is an unforgettable experience for those who follow this challenging route, deep in the southern part of Pindos; it will be imprinted on their memories for ever.
